OK so I want to, as the above describes, make a game similar to cave story in game maker. I'm able to do the art but I have no earthly idea of how to program.

So that's where you talented, beautiful, cut above the rest of us mere mortal men come in. Any help or references would be greatly appreciated home-fellows.

Now this page can be used for other to learn how to do it by reading these comments.

First learn how to make a 2D platformer engine, with X/Y positions, speed, acceleration, gravity, hitboxes, collisions, knockback, camera control, enemies and enemy AI, animations, HUDs, menus, event management, options.

Then simply define a gameplay, design some levels, write a story, make NPCs, dialogues, events, a few items, weapons, attack patterns, design a couple boss fights, add a bit of background lore, cutscenes, a beginning and an ending, and find a name for your game, and you'll be set!

good luck

Creating games is a daunting task yeah but if you persist then you'll get there. Your first (few) games won't be good, so focus less on ambitious projects and make small games to get the feel of design. Search for game maker tutorials and just follow any that you can find to gradually learn how programming and design work. Don't worry about making your games like Cave Story for now, just make something.

also expect to make a bad game. don't purposefully make something bad but at least expecting it to not be GOTY will help you be less anal when people point out flaws.

But if the plasma is yellow does it tastes like banana?

I'm makin' a game in Game Maker: Studio that's supposed to be made with almost the same engine as Cave Story.
Cave Story was made in C++.
All I need is jumping, and textboxes. I should be good from there.

If you want to make a game in an engine extremely similar to Cave Story's why not just make a Cave Story mod?

I'm kind of interested as to how this game will turn out. Maybe Cave Story but with less limitations?

I did that myself entirely through python. The engine's not fully complete, but it's something. It took me around 4 months to put together, but considering I only had 1-2 hours a day 5 days a week to do so, along with holidays, it probably could have been done in a couple of weeks. Anyhoo, I would encourage a bit of time to get used to the programming language of whatever thing your using, and expect to mess up at times. Also, p

Hey, I actually made some kind of janky remake of cave story in game maker a long time ago. I gotta check if I still have the project file.
